Street art in Coventry

Transforming public spaces and creative careers with Shape Coventry

The story of how one emerging artist reclaimed her creative voice and transformed grey urban walls into community catalysts.

When Maristella Barbera arrived in the UK from Sicily, she brought with her a lifelong passion for drawing and painting. However, like many emerging creatives balancing full-time work and life transitions, maintaining a regular artistic practice proved challenging.

Moving to Coventry offered a fresh start, but navigating the local cultural landscape took time. To find her footing and discover the region's creative network, she first ventured out to Leamington Spa, connecting with people who had ties back to Coventry and could help her uncover the local scene.

Determined to reconnect with her creative practice, Maristella immersed herself in local opportunities. Over three years, she served as President of the Coventry University Arts Society, painted a community mural for the local police station and actively collaborated with grassroots creatives across the West Midlands.

When the Shape Coventry Street Art Producer Programme appeared on her radar, she recognised the opportunity to elevate her work to a larger scale...

The artist community in Coventry was a bit hidden so I wanted to do something for the city.

Street Art Strategy was the catalyst

Street Art Strategy is a Coventry-based creative organisation dedicated to integrating street art into public spaces through murals, exhibitions, education and community engagement. By connecting artists directly with neighborhoods, Street Art Strategy turns public walls into catalysts for community conversation.

Through the Shape Coventry Street Art Producer Programme, emerging producers are equipped with the technical, safety and logistical tools needed to manage large-scale public art projects.

For Maristella, the programme was a masterclass in visual arts production:

  • Navigating city regulations: Understanding municipal permissions and public domain safety protocols.
  • Site management: Coordinating with equipment operators, artists, and logistics teams.
  • Community facilitation: Engaging with local residents and business owners throughout the creative process.

Public art as a career launchpad

Painting live in Coventry city centre transformed more than just grey urban walls; it fundamentally shifted how the community interacted with Maristella's work and how she envisioned her professional future.

Working in the public eye opened up immediate, organic opportunities. As passersby paused to watch, chat and share in the excitement, the live production process proved to be an unexpected bridge to new ventures.

Seeing her paint firsthand, a local restaurant manager was inspired by the positive energy and offered his venue on the spot for Maristella to host a new series of Sip and Paint workshops demonstrating how public art directly translates into real-world creative and commercial opportunities.

I know this is what I like. I know I can do it. There are options. There are networks.

Outside of personal career milestones, initiatives such as Shape Coventry play a vital role in joining up the dots across the local creative ecosystem, strengthening Coventry’s existing community, connecting isolated pockets of talent and building a stronger, more united artistic network.

The hands-on experience gave Maristella the momentum and confidence to expand her freelance creative practice. She has since pitched original workshop concepts to major regional cultural venues, including the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, establishing a career path that bridges public art, creative production, and community engagement.

The legacy: Giving back to the city

After six years in Coventry, Maristella’s experience with Shape Coventry cemented her sense of belonging and community purpose.

By turning empty walls into vibrant public art, Maristella and her fellow producers demonstrate how local creative initiatives empower individuals to claim their space, build lasting professional networks and enrich the city they call home.
